Module C ButtonTopic C8.1: How To Promote Learning Of The New Terms

How can the senses be used to promote learning?
One frequently overlooked association is not making an association between the term and the five senses: sight, sound, touch, smell and taste.

Advertisements always try to appeal to as many senses as possible. This is done so that a person will remember the product better when perceived from different sensory modes.

Because each sense plays its part in transferring information to your memory, it is important that you learn how to use the individual senses to help in making mental associations.

Directions will now be given on how to use the individual senses to make memory associations or links.

Sight

The most powerful way to connect something new to something already stored in ones mind is to create a picture in the mind that contains something showing the term's classification and identifying characteristic(s).

This can be done as follows:

  1. Make the identifying characteristic(s) the dominant feature of the picture or illustration of the term.
  2. Use a distinguishing color for the identifying characteristic(s)
  3. Give the picture a name and put this name on your vocabulary card.

Sounds

Always try to think of any sound that could be associated with the term's classification and identifying characteristic(s). This can be done by asking, "Are there any sounds associated with the term."

Some types of sounds are as follows:

  1. Emotional - moans, applause, cheers, etc.
  2. Mechanical - bangs, screech, roar, rattle, etc.
  3. Nature - rain, wind, waterfall, lighting, etc.
  4. Party - laughter, shouts, music, etc.

Touch

Always try to think of any feeling that could be associated with the term's classification and identifying characteristic(s). This can be done by asking, "What feeling is associated with the term's classification and identifying characteristic(s)?"

Some types of feeling are as follows:

  1. Temperature - hot, warm, cold, etc.
  2. Texture - smooth, rough, sandy, etc.
  3. Substance - glass, water, oil, etc.

Writing the term's classification and identifying characteristic(s) will improve the retention of the new information. This is one reason why it is helpful to rewrite class notes soon after a lecture.

Taste

Always try to think of any taste that could be associated with the term's classification and identifying characteristic(s). This can be done by asking, "What taste is associated with the term's classification?"

Some types of tastes are as follows:

  1. Flavor - sweet, sour, yucky, etc.
  2. Food - fruit, vegetable, meat, etc.
  3. Beverage - milk, cola, orange, etc.

Smell

Always try to think of any smells that could be associated with the term's classification and identifying characteristic(s). This can be done by asking, "What smell is associated with the term's classification?"

Some types of smells are as follows:

  1. Bad
  2. Good
  3. Food
  4. Animal
